ADD/ ADHD:

Miss Blye - ADD & Depression

My daughter had suffered from short-term memory loss and concentration difficulties from a very early age. She found it impossible to remember anything, even if she repeated it several dozen times! Memorising tables was impossible and she was more than three years behind her spelling / reading age and failing at school by the time she met Dr Kaur at the age of 13. These problems were not confined to school: at home she could not be sent off to fetch anything, since she forgot, by the time she reached her destination (assuming she hadn’t been distracted by something on the way) what she was supposed to be doing. Distractibility was a serious problem. Her mind simply could not settle on one thing. This from a child who had not spent her formative years sitting in front of the television!

Regarding my daughter’s condition, the biggest frustration we faced was the ignorance displayed by child-professionals, from counsellors to school workers, regarding ADHD. They were completely unaware that inconsistent schoolwork, a tendency to withdraw into the self and staggeringly consistent forgetfulness are classic symptoms of ADD. As I tried to explain to them that these were textbook symptoms, I would see a look of disbelief and suspicion creeping across their faces. This proved to be extremely unfortunate for my daughter, as they insisted on ‘talking about things’ or applying traditional remedial solutions, like staying in lunchtime or after school to do extra work. They disgregarded my assertion that she already did a lot of extra work at home with me, possibly thinking that if that were so, she would be doing so badly (I myself am a bookworm and have always been able to spell so I had monitored her academic difficulties from the moment I perceived she was having undue difficulties).

The first thing the EEG Neurofeedback sessions did for her was to give her the ability to remember things. She actually surpassed my ability to remember names and details.

She began to show an interest in newspapers and could actually remember what she had read. Before treatment, she could not remember what she had read at the beginning of a paragraph by the time she’d reached the end. Also, while watching a movie, she would consistently forget the storyline so far, and keep asking questions to refresh her memory. Now, she not only remembers what has gone before, but is able to interpret and recall subtleties which escape the attention of the rest of her family.

Her schoolwork has improved to the degree that all teachers gave glowing reports of her work and attitude at the last parents’ evening. Before treatment, she had not dared to make any plans or dream about her future since she was well aware that she was unable to function well enough to achieve what she wanted. Now she makes plans about what she wants to learn and which skills she wants to develop, since she knows that practising and memorising will not be a waste of time.

It is a dreadful shame this condition is not recognised as widely as it should be in order to alleviate the suffering of many children. She used to have such a terror of going to school that she suffered stomach cramps on a daily basis and could not eat in the morning, while also frequently bringing her lunch back home with her. Now that she is free of her stomach pain, she eats a satisfying breakfast and takes more lunch with her than the rest of us! She also reports that several other children, about whom she had not noticed this before, suffer from daily, morning stomach aches and cannot eat, in the same way that she used to.

The EEG Neurofeedback sessions have addressed all these problems and transformed my daughter from a withdrawn depressed child into a young lady with a social life to die for. People who knew her before treatment cannot believe the confidence with which she holds a conversation with them and how grown up she seems. Most of my friends had noticed that she suffered from an immaturity which made it difficult for her to relate to people her own age. That is now a thing of the past. EEG Neurofeedback should be made freely available to all children suffering from ADHD. We have been very lucky to have had Dr Kaur’s clinic so close to us and at a time when we needed it so desperately. Dr Kaur has literally saved my daughter’s life.
